Work at Height

We focus on the access and egress conditions of working in the wind turbine environment in this training course. Students learn knowledge and skills through practical training. You will learn skills of basic PPE and how to perform at safe work height and safe comprehensive basic rescue from height in a remote wind turbine environment.

Manual handling

The aim of this module is to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries for wind technicians in the wind industry and enable students to perform their tasks and activities in the safest possible way when working in a wind turbine environment.

OSHA 10-hour Construction Training Certification
Construction training teaches you how to spot, avoid, and report the safety and health risks you encounter at work. Our OSHA Construction training ensures you understand how to navigate common job-site hazards so that you feel safe at work. You will also learn about construction-specific safety measures such as the best practices for safeguarding against the top causes of fatalities and accidents in construction.
Confined Space Entry and Rescue
Students get classroom and hands on practical training methods of dealing with the challenges of working within wind turbine confines spaces. Correct confined space permits and documentation are part of the curriculum as well as skills and rescue devices needed for confined space entry and rescues.
Trauma at Height
Technicians learn how to respond to specific hazards of working within wind turbines, building upon skills already learned in Basic First Aid, CPR and AED. Students will learn how to respond to medical emergencies that could occur while working at heights.
CPR/First Aid/AED Certification
This basic course includes skills verification in class. Students will receive a BasicPlus certificate after completion. An online portion is required to complete before attending the verification class in person.
NFPA 70E (electrical safety training)
Working on Towers may put you at risk of electrical injury, it is crucial you stay up-to-date and compliant with the latest safety practices and provisions. Our NFPA 70E training will help to protect lives on the job, reduce injuries, OSHA violations, and liabilities. The expert- instruction in this class teaches you to identify and minimize exposure to shock, arc flash, arc blast, electrocution, and other potential hazards.
Fire Awareness

This course teaches basic knowledge and skills to prevent to prevent fires, make appropriate judgements when evaluating a fire, manage evacuation of personnel and ensure all are safely accounted for in the event of an unmanageable fire. Student will learn how to efficiently extinguish an initial fire by using basic handheld firefighting equipment.

First Aid

The aim of the BST First Aid Module is to enable students, through theoretical and practical training, to recognise signs and symptoms of life threating situations and administer safe and effective first aid in the wind turbine industry/WTG environment in order to save lives and prevent further injury, until the casualty can be handed over to the next level of care.

Working at Heights & Manual Handling Combined

The aim of this module is to enable students, through theoretical and practical training, to use basic personal protective equipment, work safely at heights and perform comprehensive basic rescue from heights in a wind turbine environment. Furthermore, this module also aims to encourage positive manual handling and ergonomic behaviour and enable participants to perform manual handling tasks in a safe manner. This course is not intended to test the participants’ capability and aptitude for working at height, i.e. it is not a test for fear of heights.

Note: BST, Working at Heights & Manual Handling Combined is a combined module comprising the lessons and elements from both the BST Working at Height Module and the BST Manual Handling Module and is intended to be delivered in two days. The combined BST Working at Height & Manual Handling Module can be delivered instead of the two stand alone modules, where the combined course is delivered, then the participants shall receive two training records: one for working at height and one for manual handling.

Hub Rescue

The aim of this module is to enable students to perform rescue operations, in a WTG hub, spinner and inside the blade by using industry standard rescue equipment, methods and techniques, exceeding those of GWO Working at Height.

Nacelle, Tower & Basement Rescue

The aim of this module is to enable students to perform injured person rescue operations in a WTG nacelle, tower, and basement, by using industry standard rescue equipment, methods, and techniques, exceeding those of GWO work at height.

Single Rescuer - Hub, Spinner & Inside Blade

The aim of this module is to enable students to perform single rescuer advanced rescue operations, in a WTG hub, spinner and inside the blade by using industry standard rescue equipment, methods and techniques, exceeding those of GWO’s BST Working at Heights.

Single Rescuer - Nacelle, Tower, Basement

The aim of this module is to enable students to perform single rescuer advanced rescue operations, in a WTG nacelle, tower and basement, by using industry standard rescue equipment, methods and techniques, exceeding those of GWO’s BST Working at Heights.

As a Wind Turbine Technician, you will perform maintenance, repair, diagnosis, and adjustments on wind turbine equipment. During this apprenticeship, you will gain introductory knowledge on resolving electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic malfunctions to the various systems on a wind turbine. As a student you will also learn the required safety standards for working on site with emphasis on fall protection, at height rescue, first aid and electrical safety. You will learn procedures involving record keeping, creating reports, and submitting documentation pertinent to the job. Testing systems, component repair and troubleshooting equipment are core requirements to your hands on competencies where you will utilize hand and power tools to perform simulated turbine work.

Wind Turbine Job Outlook

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the need for trained wind turbine technicians is expected to double in the next eight years.

Recent information published in the Occupational Outlook Handbook states the need for wind turbine service technicians is projected to grow 60% from 2022 to 2032, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Tower Training Academy is partnering with the wind energy industry to help meet the demand for trained wind turbine technicians. We have long-standing relationships with wind energy employers who keep us up to date on the industry demands for training. Based on their input, we constantly adjust our training to stay ahead of industry requirements.
